An early version of Grand Theft Auto V’s source code seems to have publicly leaked online.

Reports are coming in of an apparent full source code leak from GTA 5. The source code leak is around 4GB (compressed) and includes numerous files from the RAGE engine, concept and reference images, such as an early map of GTA 5’s San Andreas. Surprisingly, it even includes a Python script file from the unreleased GTA 6, although the file seems to be minor for now with nothing significant.

This source code isn’t entirely new, as this originated from the 2022 GTA 6 leaks, where the hacker also got a hold of the GTA V source code but kept a major part of it private to others where it was sold in between close people who would benefit from the code (such as mod menu makers), with prices rumored to be going up for 50 thousand dollars.

A game source code is the underlying set of instructions written in a programming language that forms the basis of a video game, in this case GTA 5. It contains the logic, algorithms, and functionality defining the game’s operation. A source code is kept secure for these reasons, to protect intellectual property and prevent unauthorized duplication or modification of the game.

Rockstar Games doesn’t seem to be catching a break with leaks, as it recently suffered the GTA 6 trailer leak and some days before that, a TikTok clip that showed a part of the GTA 6 city got leaked.

It remains to be seen how magnificent this leak is and how Rockstar Games and TakeTwo Interactive will respond, in the times when employees are away from the office celebrating the holidays.
